Create and delete folders

By default, messages sent to you are stored in your Inbox. However, you can organize your messages into a hierarchical folder system and continue to adjust it as your needs change. For example, you can have a folder called "My Team," with subfolders for each person on your team. When someone leaves your team you can delete that person's folder. If someone moves to another team you can move the folder to that team's folder.

The folders you create can reside at the same level as your default folders (Inbox, Sent Items, and so on), or you can build a personal folder hierarchy by creating subfolders within any existing e-mail folder. This means you can create subfolders within a default folder such as your Inbox, or within a folder that you created.

To create a folder

  1. To display your Microsoft Exchange mailbox folders, click Folders on the Navigation Pane, and then open the folder in which the new folder will reside. For instance, if the new folder is going to be a subfolder of Inbox, open Inbox.

Note  To create a new public folder you must have the necessary permissions. On the toolbar, click Public Folders, and then open the public folder in which the new public folder will reside.

  2. On the toolbar, in the menu next to New, select Folder.
  3. In Name of the folder, type a name for the new folder.
  4. In the The new folder will contain menu, select the appropriate content type for the folder. Your selection will determine which form (Contact, Calendar, e-mail message, and so on) Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access will use to display this folder.
  5. Click Create.

To delete a folder

  1. To display your Exchange mailbox folders, click Folders on the Navigation Pane.

Note  To delete a new public folder, you must have the necessary permissions. On the toolbar, click Public Folders, and then navigate to the public folder you want to delete.

  2. Select the check box next to the folder you want to delete.
  3. On the toolbar, click Delete Button image.

Note  When you delete a folder, it is moved to the Deleted Items folder. The folder isn't permanently removed until you delete it from that folder.
